INDImag’s Katha Sagar Contest. USD $150/- in Prizes

INDIMAG Katha Sagar Contest

COPY OF THE EMAIL MAILED TO ALL THE MEMBERS (Original Post Is Below ; This was added as an Update..)

Dear INDImag Members,
We could not be happier about your warm response to our Katha Sagar initiative. Thank you.
(This mail will be posted on the site to facilitate thoughts and questions members may have.)

Phase-1 At A Glance(so far..) :
Registered Members : 245
Contest Posts : 53 (we had to reject an equal number for various reasons..)
Contest Comments : 1000+
Closes : April-01 at 23.59 IST

Phase-2 Update :
(An expert panel of 1-3 panelists(non INDImag) will judge the TOP-PICKS as detailed earlier. TOP-PICKS will contain TOP-12 & WILD-CARDS(0-5) if any. TOP-12 is as determined by your RATINGs. 0-5 Posts *maybe* added by the Katha Sagar editorial team as WILDCARDS if deemed necessary. TOP-PICKS thus selected will go to Phase-2 with the votes they garnered from you ONLY ; so a WILDCARD entry will gain a berth in TOP-PICKS but will go in with the RATING you gave it ; so, safe to say, WILDCARD entries will have a lower rating than every TOP-12 story)

Dates : April – 02 to April – 06
Results : April – 07
Experts Panel : We are thrilled to have 2 people who are well known and respected in their domain agree to share their thoughts and time in Katha Sagar’s phase-2. These two distinguished individuals are doing this just for their love of this medium and we cannot begin to express how grateful and thankful we are for their time. This panel will assess their ratings and their comments on TOP-PICKS by April-06. The panel’s cumulative ratings will carry a weightage of 50% while Phase-1 ratings already assessed by you in determining the TOP-PICKS will account for the remaining 50%. We will announce the names and introduce the panel next week..

Panelist-1 : Editor of a well known(and respected) group blog.
Panelist-2 : Editor of a well known (and respected) regional language portal, a Sahitya Academy Awardee & a Writer
Panelist-3 : <YET TO CONFIRM>

Again, Thank you for your time, effort and participation and be sure to VOTE !

——————————————————————————————————————————
INDImag is happy to announce it’s Katha Sagar Contest.

What is it ? It  is a short-story writing contest.

Background : For regulars at INDImag, it does not come as a surprise that we love short-stories. Stories have a way of connecting people and touching their hearts. Like a good cup of coffee, a thriller can stimulates one’s senses and linger on far after enjoying it, while at the diametric opposite end of the spectrum, a story that your grandmother narrated to you as a kid, soothed you to sleep and filled you with sweet dreams.

Stories, like clay, provide an endless medium of possibilities limited only by the author’s imagination. We want to unleash a sea of these stories. Hence Katha Sagar..

…Short Story Contest — USD$ 75/- First Prize ; $50/- Second ; $25/- Third..
Your choice of topic ; 3+ weeks to write... ; all the freedom. Submit-Vote at INDImag.

When cable TV was something you heard other countries had, when blogging was not even a thought and when Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla had broken out into a song, pimples and stardom all for the first time in late 80s, our good old Doordarshan gave us a few programs that were a class apart. Katha Sagarwas one such. Short stories sourced from authors around the world were crafted into bite-sized, 30 minute serials aired once a week, introducing many of us into this wonderful art — story-telling.

By borrowing the name of our inspiration, we hope to honor it and try and unleash a sea of tales.“Katha Saagar” .

Please Help Us Make It Happen..

More Details to Follow in a few days, a quick overview is as below :

What’s at stake :

  • First Prize : USD $ 75/-
  • Second Prize : USD $ 50/-
  • Third Prize : USD $ 25/-
  • 3 ‘Valuable Commenter’ Badges

Basic Idea :

  1. Open to INDImag.com members ONLY. For registration use the top panel(top of every page on INDImag has a pull-down..).When the contest is opened, you will need to login and post the story in INDImag. You will also need to login to vote. In short, ONLY registerd users can post-vote.
  2. Topic of your choice ; genre of your choice; content length (micro fiction, short-story, flash fiction) of your choice. 3 weeks to publish (any time during those 3 weeks), read and vote.
  3. “NEW-UNPUBLISHED” Short stories only. Previously published stories are NOT allowed. The effort is to unleash a sea of creativity to come up with something new.
  4. Judging will be by votes on each post (by registered users). A cumulative total of the registered users’ star-ratings (50% weightage) and votes by a panel of experts (50% weightage) will determine the winners.
  5. Dates/Schedule will be announced next week.

FAQ

  1. Can I submit my older posts ? – No. Unpublished, New Stories ONLY. Older published posts rob the freshness — many of our readers may have already read that post and commented..
  2. Is there a limit on the number of submissions ? – Yes. 2 in all (1 if you decide to publish in 2 parts).
  3. Do I need to register ? Yes. So we can automate the voting and also have a trail of who voted and how. This will allow voting to happen daily through out the 3 week duration of the competition. Rate objectively ; Your rating will be confidential.
  4. Can I just vote ? Yes. Registered users can participate (submit posts) and vote as well. But if anyone wishes to JUST vote and not write, as long as the person is a registered user, he/she can.
  5. If I need my friends to vote, do they need to register ? Yes. Registration needed to vote and/or participate. Commenting, however, is not subjected to any restrictions. But be sure to encourage family/friends to participate honestly — vote for your and other participants honestly based on the merit of the post, not ties to you. We will question any attempt at cartel-ization.
  6. Are we voting for one post only ? No. You get to vote/rate every post on a scale of 10 (10 being the highest).
  7. When will the contest open ? The tentative dates will be published mid next week.
  8. How long is the contest ? 3 weeks. During the 3 weeks you can post any time. You are requested to return and answer comments/critiques on your post and also read-vote the other posts. The panel of experts (who account for 50% of the weightage) WILL look at comments to see how the author clarifies his/her view point, engages his readers and handles praise, criticism.
  9. Can I Cross-Post my entry on my blog or elsewhere ? No. For the duration of the contest you cannot cross-post your article. Once the contest is done, you are free to(you own the copyright). Given the voting happens at INDImag, it would be counterproductive to have multiple versions floating around and deal with non-publish violations from other publishers. We will also NOT allow edits past a few hours after publishing unless there was an issue in the publishing. We will NOT allow taking down of published posts.
  10. Can I publicize my post with an excerpt ? Absolutely. Given 50% of the votes come via commenters who vote, you are encouraged to publicize and steer your readers to read and vote. Again, be sure to encourage them to participate honestly — vote for your and other participants honestly based on the merit of the post, not ties to you. We will question any attempt at cartel-ization.So you can post a blog-post that’s an excerpt with a link to your post on INDImag where they can read it in full and vote. Facebook, Twitter promotion is a YES as well…
  11. Do I need to wait to register ? No. Please feel free to register at the earliest, update your profile and familiarize yourself.
  12. Can I start writing my story ? Absolutely. Just do not publish it elsewhere — your blog/other sites.
  13. Will I get help if I need ? For any technical difficulties involving the site, formatting etc, yes. But the content will NOT be edited for either quality, typos or grammar.
  14. Any restrictions on the content ? We need the content to be suitable for all audience. We are a PG-13 site and anything not suitable for a PG-13 site will not be entertained. So explicit content, racial content, adult content is UN-WELCOME.
  15. Is there any material that I can use to publicize to my audience ? Please use the banners below and link back to this post. You can SHARE this post on your FaceBook page by using the SHARE feature on Support the ‘Endangered Authors’ ‘ block  after comments ..
  16. Is poetry allowed ? Yes. Given, some of our greatest epics are stories conveyed poetry, we will allow short stories conveyed via poetry.

About the Author

Madhu Rao

I'm Madhu Rao. You know how blogs and discussions are supposed to be dynamic and exciting but they're usually dull and boring? I have some practical ideas to present them in an entertaining way -- with your help. The result, hopefully, is that people stay awake, have a good time, and return-contribute to INDIMAG. I'm the publisher-founder of INDIMAG and would love to hear from you as to how we are doing. Drop me a line at indimag@gmail.com ie indimag [at] gmail [dot] com with any questions, thoughts, ideas or a plain "Hello". I would appreciate it.

Blog :

  • Thanks a lot for organizing this initiative, Madhu. I came to know of this contest through the blogs of a couple of Blog-a-ton bloggers I had started following since the last Blog-a-ton. I have been waiting 2 years since I started my blog in 2006 to write my first proper story (purely imaginary, not descriptions of real life incidents). Thanks to this initiative I managed to write not one but two stories within the span of a week.

On an aside I had a query about the voting. Voting looks enabled for self post as well. Should one refrain from voting for self or do a honest self rating compared to other posts here or give 10 for oneself to boost one's score?
  • You are kind TF. Welcome to INDImag and hopefully you will stick
around and join in on the discussions on stories and posts after the
    contest as well :-)

Per your stories, I would not have guessed they were by a first
timer , looks like it is by a seasoned story teller.

Voting on self posts is a NO. Ideally , JavaScript - browser working
in tandem correctly, system should prevent self-voting but it may have
it's moments where it doesn't . If one of those come thru we in the
    editorial team delete it :-)
  • Thanks for your clarification, Madhu. I definitely plan on sticking around after the contest too. Been enjoying the discussions here so far.

I am happy that you find my stories are like that of a seasoned story teller. A great morale booster that was. I have written other things on my blog - opinions on issues, descriptions of real life incidents and a couple of pieces portraying how a person from past or future would view a common event of today. But I felt stories were the toughest because the characters, the settings, the plot all have to be created afresh. That is why I had been shy of venturing into that area so far. But this contest gave me the necessary impetus to explore this territory as well.

By the way, Madhu, you had mentioned in your comment from your phone that you would give detailed feedback on 'The lonely Bus stand'. I would also be glad of your feedback on 'Mohiniattam'.
  • Glad to hear that TF. Yeah saw you and Nash having a nice discussion or two with Sumana and Vivek in tow.

I'll meander in and comment on the two posts ; Maya and I have been taking turns (and even waiting a couple of comments before we opine..) and commenting on alternate ones so we do not over do :-) , will definitely pen my 2 cents on your two posts..
  • Madhu, kudos to you and your team for this brilliant effort. I've missed out on quite a lot of stories which I hope to catch up on as soon as I'm back in Doha.

Wish you, your team and all the participants all the very best for the contest! May the best and most deserving entry win. Good luck!
  • Thanks Deeps. You gave been INDImag's biggest short story supporter :-)

I understand you have been busy ; hope you enjoyed your stay ; when
you do read the stories please do vote/rate , will help the contest a
    lot :-)
  • jitin
my story is ready...but how do i submit it??? i have already registered.....i cant see any link that takes me to story submission page
  • Jitin, login using the top banner and then post->new post
  • Pal
    Hi Madhu,
Exciting initiative here! Thank you for inviting me via my blog.
    Cheers..Pal
  • Pal
Though, I think the entire exercise would be more productive/fruitful if we had a theme / selection of themes. And/or the genre of writing. Like someone else has mentioned here, it is rather easy to write a 55-er (I love them myself!) but more challenging to write a short story. Just the same, a short story could have better impact (courtesy: characterisation / storyline / etc.) so it might be more popular (well, if people take the time to read it). Also, someone could write a story of 5000 words, but there may be no readers! Therefore, if there could be specific guidelines, it will certainly help.
  • Pal, I understand what you say but that would come with it's share of
issues --people complaining it's too restrictive - predetermined
topic, rigid format . I personally believe that to be stifling as
    well ..

In order to let the creativity flow we have choosen the path of least
shackles as at the end of the day the voter and the experts decide
what was good and worthy :-)
  • This is something I would love to participate in. Thanks Madhu for visiting my blog and the link, all set to go. My name shows registered , do I need to sigh up with you again?
  • Thanks a lot for registering Tikuli. No other registration needed;
your Id got created fine. please do update your profile so people can
get to know you - once the contest starts people will look the the
members page a lot more ( top menu)
  • HEY, CAN I POST THE STORY AS A 2 PART SERIES
  • Yes Venky you can ..
  • Arun Athmanathan
How do we submit our stories, once we've signed up? Do we just post them and put in a general tag, or is there a specific URL/tag? I just signed up to INDIMag, and would like to submit something for this contest.
  • Arun,

The staging opens today. Please add a new post :

    1.Login ; Posts->add new ; Add the posts
2.Be sure to select 'KATHA SAGAR' as the category ; type in tags that apply.

All posts staged from today thru Mar-07 will be published on Mar-08 when the contest opens. past Mar-08, the posts will be published as they come -- few times a day :-)

the contest so it can add to the quality. :-)

    Please do write..

  • ravilobo
All the best Madhu. Hope to read some good stories here.
  • Thank you Ravi. Just all the best ? You write some great stuff ,
hoping to see you register and participate !
  • ravilobo
I will try. Not sure though, if I could write anything worth while in 3 weeks.

My only worry is, whenever the masses get to decide the outcome, almost every time the result is a crap. The user vote, which has the 50% weight-age concerns me.

Also, I don’t like Micro fiction or 55 fiction. I feel it is killing real short stories. A short story takes around 1-4 weeks to write. Microfiction – I can write 10 in an hour. (I will probably write more, If I really want to.) By putting these two in a single category, I feel, indimag is making a great injustice to the actual short stories.
  • I understand your sentiments Ravi , but the readers' voice needs heard
as well and we did not want to just do a judging by a panel only. On
55f or traditional short stories it us to welcome all forms,
Hemmingway's only short story was a one liner :-)

At the end of the day if it's good it will be appreciated. Or that's
    the hope :-)
  • ravilobo
Madhu, I understand what you are saying. We just have different opinions.

    >> Hemmingway's only short story was a one liner :-)

This is not a true statement. Hemmingway wrote many short stories. Of course he wrote the shortest story too. I think, someone (possibly at a bar) challenged to write the shortest story, and he came up with the one liner. Nevertheless he wrote many wonderful short stories.
  • You are correct Ravi. I stand corrected on the only short story by Hemmingway part. But the point I was trying to make was even great have done micro, flash fiction. Restricting the competition to just 1 might not do justice. Given anything online gets judged 3 seconds into it a 30 page short which is a great thing for a New Yorker is a bad idea for a blog (paginating 30 pages?). So, it's up to the authors as to how they want to present it 1/2 page or 30 pages :-)
  • Yo signed up Madhuji!! will try to get some more people to participate! great initiative
  • Naren,
Thank you for registering. A bigger thank you for offering
    to spread the word !
  • Awesome! Nice to see this kind of contest coming on IndiMag. Good going folks! Wishing all the participants a good luck... be reminded of a stiff competition from me :)
  • Thanks Mohan . Good to have you participate ..
  • Hey, this is interesting Madhu..good luck :)
  • Thank you Neha
