In the late 80s, before the advent of cable TV, when the 9.00 o’clock serials on Doordarshan used to capture the attention of the Indian middle class, there was one of these serials called Mr. Yogi. It was a comic-tragic series where Yogesh Ishwarlal Patel, an NRI (Non Resident Indian) returns to Bombay for a bride. As a school boy, having a good laugh at the expense of Mr. Yogi, being in a similar situation 20 years down the line was the last thing on my mind. But then isn’t that what life is all about? A series of unfortunate events occurring when you least expect them to. I actually fail to remember if Mr. Yogi ultimately found a suitable bride. I wonder whatever happened to Mr.Yogi, the same fate awaits me.
Every week, there is a mad scramble, a veritable race between dog and woman, to see who gets to greet the Lord and Master first as he arrives home for the weekend. This is about one such weekend….
Memories flashed through my mind. The very first was that of her late father suggesting a topic for research and then of her writing a credible synopsis that would be accepted by a very well-respected Professor who would agree to guide her. The heart burning process of navigating through the bureaucracy of the University for registration; convincing recalcitrant industry managers to let her see the food facilities provided to their labour force as it would ultimately help the industry; collecting huge data and then trying to make sense of it; selecting modes of data presentation so that a credible thesis was evolved and submitted; getting papers selected for presentation at international conferences and then attending them… The list is long.

It did not just come ; over a period of a few years, it stormed into our houses and became such an integral part of very many Indian households. One [...]

As the truism goes, ” Children walk to school but run back home “. When the day happened to be the last day of your final exam, that walk was extra sweet, extra special and laden with unbridled happiness. There would be a jump in the stride and a glee on the face. Not much in the world could bog you down as you danced into the sun kissed arms of summer vacation..
Compulsively, I checked my email before I headed out for a team dinner. I had a mail from my brother with a subject “Package Received”. Being happy to note that, I skimmed thru the rest of the contents which was about the well being of my family back home in India. I then rushed out. Being late, I slipped into a [...]
