1 Thru 10 INDIA
Help the “Other India” ..
Everybody has dreams. It is what you do with them after you wake up that matters..
- 1% of your monthly salary, every month, to a charitable cause thru 2010.
- Inspire at least 10 people to start the above by 2010.
Please read “1 thru 10 My Indian Dream” for a detailed introduction ; watch the video too..
You do not give the money to any organization. Your money does not end up in a black-hole because you control everything. You decide who best benefits from your help and extend that. It could be an extra Rs.100 to the maid Lakshmi ; a new Rs.500 toolset for the cobbler at your street corner ; a set of books for an orphanage’s kids’ library ; a pair of eyes — the gift of sight –, for Rs.1000 via Sankara eye foundation.
It’s your help on your terms. You are answerable to just “you”.
Once you start (1), talk about it, blog about it. It makes you feel good. It will inspire others as well. If 10% of the people feeding make believe animals on Facebook’s Farmville take to feeding our brothers that go hungry, you will have done something. Something way better than raking up imaginary points.
You do not have to contend with a facebook application saying you could be “Rahul from Dil To Pagal Hai” or “Naina from Kal Ho Na Ho..”
You can enusre you are a “Mohan from Swades”
Tips
- You can’t eradicate poverty by giving away money ; make your money work and the dividents pay rather than giving a handout.
- Balaji in Tirupati does not need your Rs.1000. Balaji, your driver will appreciate it..
- Donate to an orphanage.
- Sponsor an impoverished school library.
- Consider working with a microfinance group that loans small amounts.
- Support a cobbler who needs Rs.500 to get a new set of tools
- Teach them to fish ; poor do not need handouts, they need a little help and encouragement. Gift of sight by Sankara eye foundation gives someone sight. A sight they could not afford. A sight that lasts their lifetime..
- Talk about your charity. It will inspire other people and eventually help the needy.
An old Kannada song sums it up best :
Heaven’s here, hell’s here, there’s nothing up there
In between birth and death, it’s but 3 days’ of life..
Make your 3 days count. Go do something good for your country…
