My Name is Khan – A Review

My Name Is Khan Movie Review

I have always had reservations about a Johar movie, especially, when he directs it. Not heeding the advice of empirical data and ignoring my intuition (can sense a bollywood disaster !),  with lots of time to kill last night, my brother and I zeroed in on My Name is Khan (MNIK).

For the first time, Karan Johar has tried his hand at “serious” and “meaningful” cinema.

I hope this is his last time.

My Name is Khan chronicles the life of a Rizwan Khan with Asperger’s Syndrome. The movie is a three hour melodrama on his life, his outlook, his relationships, his beliefs, his religion, his kindness, mother-son relationship, husband-wife relationship, racism, Hindu – Muslim riots, 9/11, post 9/11 atrocities on various ethnic communities, Afghanistan, Iraq, President Bush, Hurricane Katrina, President Elect Obama.

There is more. But I am overwhelmed and hence cannot mention all the other issues the movie brought up.

Terrorism, Mental/Physical Disorders and Religion – all require certain sensitivity to portray onscreen. Karan fails colossally. From the story to characterization – everything is faulty in this one.

The movie is so inconsistent when it deals with characters and historical events, that it leaves you feeling stupid.

E.g. Towards the end of Bush’s term, when Obama was catapulted on the world political stage, I remember reading that Bush had been advised to make lesser public appearances, since his face was actually doing more harm to Republican candidates than helping them win. So if you have followed the 2008 Presidential Elections, you would actualy know that Bush had almost disappeared from the public scene. Yet, the movie, not only shows Bush in his full glory, being treated like a King at all public appearances, and that at the fag end of his term ! Which would mean August/September 2008 ! Why Karan why??

Also, the relationship between SRK & Kajol is just so inadequate and glib that it leaves you speechless, really.

The movie has various such exasperating incidents and goof ups. In trying to address various issues, Karan loses track and ends up addressing nothing. One wouldn’t mind such stupidity, had the central characters been well written and brought out onscreen. But none of that happens.

SRK’s Rizwan is not what a person with Asperger’s Syndrome would look, dress and be like. Though SRK does a good job in some scenes, especially which only require him to smile coyly, or show his emotions when the situation demands, overall I wasn’t convinced.

The biggest let down was Kajol’s Mandira. The character has no depth ; will seem like an opportunist by the end of the movie, if you are still watching it, that is. Kajol, though looks stunning, has a weak role and I am amazed how she didn’t object while going with it.

The music by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy is very average and doesn’t make the journey any easy for the viewer.

It would have made more sense to make a movie with a person afflicted with some disorder and focus on his relationships. Or a movie just on Terrorism. Or a movie on the plight of ethnic communities in the US after 9/11. Or a superhero SRK flying in to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Yes, that would have been more convincing.

While I fidgeted in my seat last night, and almost cried out of boredom, I took an oath of never to watch Karan Johar directed movies, not even if I am thrown out of my house and have no avenues of killing time.

Foot Note :

Yesterday was an official paid leave for the Policemen of Mumbai. About 30 policemen guarded the Cinemax we went to. We saw a dozen outside a closed Fame Adlabs too. A weekend and no shows to run? What I am happy about is that our overstretched, tired, un-appreciated policemen got a paid leave. I don’t know if being over-stretched yet doing real work is more exhausting than watching a Karan Johar movie.

    Mukta,
nice review. It was a silly film. Like most hindi films are.
    Here's a related, pertinent link.

  • Thank you Manoj. Silly, indeed.
It is funny when I read about Karan's decision to release it in various languages, to target a larger audience :-)
  • Mukta,
A very good review. I am tempted to agree whole-heartedly with you, but will wait till I catch the movie.

In the meanwhile, what's not in doubt is that your post scored well with readers :-) . Added a bling (image at the footer). Congrats ! Your post was at the top of Indivine when I checked :-)
  • Hey Maya, thanks !
I don't follow Indivine much and was happy to see it when you pointed it out...

Do share what you felt about the movie...
  • I like the way you have reviewed the movie. I am not a big fan of SRK but wanted to watch it for Kajol. I think she did this movie for Friendship sake and also to earn some moolah.

I have gotten mixed reviews from my friends though I have yet to watch it myself.
  • Hey LP, I too went in only for Kajol. Was disappointed.

True, she would do any movie offered to her by Karan...even if it's a blink and miss appearance...Yet, this wasn't a guest appearance. She was the lead actress and should have demanded for a better sketched role.

@Manorama - Thank you. I can't blame you for wanting to watch it. I fell for it too :D

    @Dave - Thank you.

    @Prashant - Agree about core competency !
  • I agree with you that the movie is not great.I guess ppl should stick to their core competencies. KJo is good at making NRI love stories. He should do just that. Serious movies can be left for the likes of Shyam Benegal.

  • I can't wait to watch this movie....
    Good review.

    @Makk,
I'll look into that but I have a few plug-ins tied to commenting and the last time I tried adding some new features -- editing, nested commenting, it broke a few things. I'll look into it in the next few days .. :-)
  • @Mukta: Nice review. You've told it like it is !
I don't know why kjo is always trying to stuff messages down our throats (ears and noses)...:-|
But I guess I'll go see it all the same. See,that's the problem with his movies :D

@KP – You are right about Critics. Infact, if you read what Critics have said about MNIK, most of them have dwelled more on the Sena/SRK face off and hence have supported the movie and praised it lavishly. Co-relating both the issues is incorrect. Also, I am no one to judge an experienced Critic. Yet, even a novice can see when some critics bend backwards to praise ordinary movies. For e.g. I thought 3 Idiots was an ordinary movie. But again, most critics thought it was a gift to Cinema :)

@Neha - Thanks :) I only hope Dharma productions doesn't read this. They will sue me ;)

@Makk - Yes, the message is an important one. Hence, it was even more important to just deal with one topic. This movie did more dis-service to the whole message. Again, I have been a Kajol fan too. Hence, it was even more disappointing to see her wasted here.

@Nethra – Thank you. About News channels and newspaper critics, I stopped trusting them years back. Kjo's Kabhi Khushi...was rated 4* by many critics !
Again, as I said, as a stand alone product the movie wasn't good, even where it tried to entertain. Karan's Kal Ho na Ho had better entertainment value.

    @Joe – Yes, smart decision :)
  • Maybe I will watch it ON TV (whenever it comes)

  • Message was: MY NAME IS KHAN & I AM NOT A TERRORIST.

    (typo in original comment)

    Madhu

I request you provide editing option. if you can.

  • Was it so bad? Whats with tv channels rating it 5/5 and srk going around saying he is damn good actor? Whatever it is I am not planning to watch it.
    Nice review!
    .-= Nethra´s last blog : ..What if? =-.
  • have been to movie last evening only.

    I think:

    for the movie

1.Message delivered (My name is and I am not a terrorist)
This is strong reason it self.I guess. Is not it?

2.SRK in his natural emotional flow. (of course he always try to make you emotional fool..so if like that thing then only)

    3. Stunning Kajol (Here i am taking a liberty, being a Kajol fan)
(though character is not having much scope for her)

    against:

    1. KJo tried too many thing in one movie.

He tried hurricane, terrorism, racism etc all in one and when you taste the cocktail. You may feel like "KHICHDI" with tooooo many things.

    2. SRK was taking cinematic liberty while portraying a mentally challenged person.(As he said in an interview on a FM channel) and it some what made that character little filmy. One may get annoyed on this.

    but still:

One should go for the movie because message delivered & more over it wasn't a trauma indeed rather you will enjoy hopefully (unless you are not biased against KJo).

I would like to mention I am no fan of KJo as well.
    .-= Makk´s last blog : ..Ankahi... =-.
  • Hey Mukta,

that was a good review..I am not a fan of KJo movies - be it a melodramatic or an experimental one..after reading such a crisp review by you; I am now dead sure I have to convince my husband against watching this :D

@KP, :-), I thought you were referring to yourself . Will let Mukta get back to you. I understand what you mean.
  • K.P. Santosh
I subjected ‘have a higher understanding of cinema’ to critics!
What i always get to see from the reviews is the description of the cinema and not the precise judgement unlike @Mukta. :-)
Yes, critics are good for identifying actor's strong/weak points but apparently, there are few well known Critics who tend to rage the movie or appreciate it immensely (when the movie endorses the critic's website! bollywoodhungama.com for instance)!
What i've tried expressing was, it takes great courage and dedication to write a meaningful script.. Just that the direction gets impromptu!
  • Mukta Matta
@Madhu - Thanks. I think Karan needs to know who is target audience is. Nothing wrong with his kind of Cinema. But it definitely gets on my nerves if people like him attempt serious cinema :)

Yes, it will be a blockbuster, mainly because of the Sena/SRK face-off.

@Santosh - I have nothing to disagree with really.. Again, nothing wrong with Karan's movies. However, it is always nice to be melodramatic and authentic. Karan is one of the few directors who can afford to make authentic and stylish movies. Pity, he doesn't realise his own power.

As a cinema lover and an amateur critic, I tried to point out what was wrong with the movie. This becomes important, when all I get to read is 5 1/2 stars for this movie. Infact, most well known movie critics have supported the movie only because they supported SRK against Shiv Sena. That's not how it should be done.Movies should always be judged as stand alone products and not on the publicity and controvery they generate.
  • K.P. Santosh
I kinda differ with the thought of reviewing a movie!
It is not necessary that YOUR opinion about a movie is same as the ppl who supposedly have a higher understanding of cinema.
The reason why i differ about movie reviews is u hardly find a review vich tells HOW d film ws. you'd rather find a shortened screenplay!
Any movie goer won't wait for a review to judge whether to go and watch or not! Just watch it as the way it is meant to be.

It's just few hours of entertainment, appeasement, aka "change of world for short period of time" through a message driven script.
KJo's movies are melodramatic, but these were the movies we all grew up watching! (Atleast for the one's in 90's time)..
  • Madhu Rao
    @K.P,
Will let Mukta answer your question, but who are these 'have a higher understanding of cinema' you refer to ? Critics or you or people who have liked the movie(unlike Mukta) ? While I understand you may want to differ with Mukta's view (valid one given the movie is raking in the money and people do seem to like it), I'm not sure I understand '..differing with (her) thought/ style of reviewing '. It's her opinion of the movie. She does go into detail on why she dislikes it :

    - (Kajol) he character has no depth
    - Also, the relationship between SRK & Kajol is just so inadequate and glib
    - It would have made more sense to make a movie with a person afflicted with some disorder and focus on his relationships. Or a movie just on Terrorism. Or a movie on the plight of ethnic communities in the US after 9/11. Or a superhero SRK flying in to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

I have not seen the movie and will hold my judgement for now, but what you state is very generic. Except for stating we are 'used to this' and 'check your brains at the door, it's bollywood' you are not elaborating much as to why one should go watch this. People do look at reviews. At least I do :-) . Being honest many reviews are good to MNIK, so it may just be that Mukta did not like. Still, it was her view of the movie and if I were to make a decision to go check/chuck the movie, Mukta has a better argument here. Convince me otherwise ! :-)
  • Madhu Rao
A very nice review Mukta. I have my reservations about anything Dharma, especially KJ directed ones and this re-enforces it. But I hear it is going to be a blockbuster ?

I have not watched it yet, will do so this week..
