The State(s) of India for Dummies

Not taking anything away from Telengaana, the fact of the matter remains that it will open floodgates. Floodgates for separate state demands in every other state that lay dormant till now. While I wish Telengaana the best and hope it’s neglected people see better days, we know the reality

Politicians are like diapers, almost always full of crap ; if not, it is just a metter of time..“

The common call in all demands for a separate state is ”small is better” – smaller states lending to better governance, better utilization of resources and more jobs for the locals. Parts of it are true ; true if done right. But to expect better from Telengaana politicians than the rest of their Indian bretheren is stupidity.

What about the flip side? Do you think Telengaana or Andhra or even Hyderabad will have the muscle it had in the center pre-split ?

Bodoland, Harit Pradesh, Gorkhaland, Kodagu, North Karnataka, Kongu Nadu, Tulu Nadu, Bundelkhand, Vidharba, Rayalseema, Telengana, Konkan, Sourashtra…..

Imagine what an Election-2020 will look like with these new splinters. Can you say ‘Horse Trading’ ? (I prefer donkey ; describes our netas better)

A picture is worth a thousand words. This gem from livemint surmises what we maybe looking at in the future. Be sure to click the image for a magnified view of the mess we are looking at…

    @Narendra, You said it. If we keep slicing our country, there's no end to it. We should look at solving the issues and slicing up is no solution..

    @Alltalknoaction,
    Hey good to see you back !

    I'll pour over the swaminomics and respond, but on the first link, like I told Mahesh above, the first comment on the link summarizes my view-point ; here it is again..

    Article too academic and divorced from reality

    By: Ganesh Patwardhan | 16-Dec-2009

    The underlying assumption in the article appears to be that there is a will to govern and size hinders effective administration. Here’s another point of view: Every new state means new assembly / council, new set of cabinet ministers, new houses (lifelong free tenancy?) for the assembly and council members, new police force and opportunity to exercise control over it, new High Courts, other judiciary all the allied paraphernalia, more avenues for political careers for sons/daughters/other relatives, new cars, new helicopters, higher vanity enhancing security grades and ‘black cats’, new powers of patronage, trips abroad with entourage of sixty odd including family members and relatives and five-star hotel stays and so on endlessly. Only then will it be possible for these honorees to extend their valuable service to the ‘poorest of the poor’! Does this explain the clamor for new states? First demonstrate the will to administer by evicting the (at present count) 14 odd ex-MP squatters.

    Madhu,

    I differ on this subject.

    Attaching 2 links which provide good food for thought for smaller states -

    If, economic development is the basis of separation, then it makes sense.
  • Its like you start creating states and our kids will have trouble learning the names! then noone will bother to learn about states and people living their..cos then it is too much of burden on our kids...similarly ppl/govt will stop listening to these smaller states...because they then become insignificant...no elections for such states,..WHO CARES!! no judiciary for such states! crime rate sky rocketting!no proper representation of small states in assemblies I DONT CARE,MY STATE IS NOT CONCERNED..(you separated..ab AB BHUKTO!!)..eventually there wil be enmity within states/leaders/people!!..we will creat INDIA-PAK within INDIA!! (PAK is wondering..!!:P )

    in short IMHO this is a disaster!!

    @Mahesh,
    Read the article and my response would be what the first commenter on the post has posted. Just look at what has happened now, split into 5 pieces and Naidu and Chiranjeevi doing a volte face and the center following suit ..

  • Hi Madhu,

    This link(Indian Express) is not regarding Telangana, but related to your blog topic.
    It has presented some other perspectives too which may help us to have more comprehensiveness in our discussion

    Why We need small states @

    @Shruthi,
    Namaskara ri. I know, at this rate we will have a state of Malleshwaram soon for sure ! I'm partial to Veena stores ! Not for the idlis but the chutney ! We would walk all the way from MES to Veena stores for idli lunch once a week thought there were many darshinis and MES cafeteria ...
  • Valid reasons Madhu. I agree. I also feel this in most respects is highly regressive. As you mentioned imagine India in 2020! we'll be a wreck (thanks to all the donkeys who'll rule).

    On a lighter note, I demand a separate Malleshwaram state to fight against Basavanagudi State. The issue that needs immediate attention is- who makes better idli's - Veena stores or Brahmin's coffee bar? :P

    @Rob,
    Welcome to INDImag and thank you for your comment. Hyderabad is certainly the prized possession that neither will want to lose out. Add to that per today we see demands for a 5 way split of the state and the stalemate on Telengana. Center messed up big time and it was a big surprise to all that they OKed it. You are so right this whipped up emotions will be directed at the newly formed(if they do get created..) states' government in 5 years for failing to keep the promises while lining their pockets..
  • Rob Salis
    Hmm,I am actually glad that you came with this post.Simmering tensions have actually created a mess out here in our nation.Right now I am in hyderabad and actually I can feel it myself.Its like a state of trance and suddenly you wake up and see all this happening.The KCR fast unto death actually inspired other parties demanding for statehood.May be he thinks himself as a hero but its actually sad that this would lead to disintegration of India.When britishers left India they said one thing.
    "These bloody Indians would divide their country and destroy themselves" and I can see all that happening after 62 years of independence.Its strange but now demands for statehood has actually becoming a trend and its sad that our leaders are doing nothing.Pressure from China on north east is another issue.Telangana thing may be successful.But now the fight is for Hyderabad. I strongly believe that Andhra is still alive only because of Hyderabad. I don't give a f$%$# to it and its coz of hyderabad that Andhra pradesh is there.Therez nothing to do with this state and this sudden outrage amongst the youth of the states,lawyers and political parties have created a havoc.This won't lead any good to any one.I'm feeling sad about this. This would actually hamper our country in some or other way.

    At one state few political parties burst out their angers upon migration of north indians and in other violence coz of state division..If we are not united,then what can we expect...silly
  • Madhu Rao
    We now have a demand for Andhra Pradesh to be divided into : Telengana, North Coastal Andhra, South Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Hyderabad ?

    Flood gates anyone ?
  • Madhu Rao
    @Mahesh,
    I'll let the others chime in with what they felt but to me with little changes the video is a reflection of what happens in many a places in India. It did not convince me about the need Telengaana. It does show the neglect,broken promises some of our fellow citizens have been subject to but it could easily have been a case of a farmer in Orissa or North Karnataka..

    @Mahesh,

    Let me start out by saying I want Telengaana to work. But given our past, I'm skeptical.

    1.”small is better” is still applicable. I understand the stats -- 4 Cr, bigger than 25 states etc. But here the smaller is with regard to United Andhra and how in that big state, regions were overlooked ; with a smaller(than Andhra, not other smaller states) Telengana the hope is for better governance....

    2. I looked at the wiki links and I understand where you are coming from, but like Neha said, the formation of states was fraught with issues. The need for us to keep redrawing our state lines in the 6 decades of independence is a testament to that. Given that most activists will find enough red meat to justify their cases. Ex. I heard someone mention that the call for Karnataka's formation, the activism et all happened in 1948 from Kasargod and how ironic and stupid is it that Kasargod is not a part of Karnataka. It was the seat of ...

    3. US has 50 states, so why not India : US can pull off quite a few things that India cannot. Though democracies both, the largest democracy by numbers in India has far more issues than the US. Doubling up the number of states in the hopes that it would bring better administration is being too optimistic. Uttaranchal, Chattishgadh etc have show it can fail. Delhi is held out at a success. Agree. But Delhi is Delhi ; given it's the capital it will be a shade ahead of the rest. It is our living room. When the existing states with decades of experience, infrastructure are failing miserably with corruptions, nepotism et al, you think it is wise to double up the number of states 1/2 of which have no experience and need to start out by looking for a building to house the government. The infrastructure, the cost, the headache etc all for what ? Almost no change..

    I would hope people look at Telengaana over the next 5 years and see where it goes. That should provide enough indication of some realities than jumping in blindly (for other states partitions)..
  • Madhu Rao
    @Harsha,
    My father told the exact same thing about 550 provinces :-) . Couldn't agree more. Given the motivation at the center is not just the wellbeing of the oppressed Telenganaites this sets a bad precedent. In Coorg the issue can be made bigger with oppression/suppression of the language and culture that's different than the state language. Same for Tulu Nadu. Good catch on Madikere vs. Kodagu ; sent a note to livemint with your blog-link as the person who found the faux-pas ..

    @Karthik,
    I know. And not just that, we will see Cauveri become a contention between South and North Karnataka leave alone Tamil Nadu. Just like Krishna and Godavari river disputes will emerge soon given the disparate sharing of the river water and other resources being at the top of the reasons for carving out Telengaana..

    @Neha,
    You said it. We did that mistake decades ago and keep doing it again. MH wants UPites out ; Belgaum wants to go to MH ; Karnataka wants Kasargod . Like Harsha said, we are looking at cutting up India like if it were a pie ..

    @DilOnTheRocks,
    I hear you. That was my father's lament as well. Though a Kannadiga he and his brothers,sisters were born and brought up in AP till they hit college and he cannot believe that it is split and more will follow..
  • It is quite scary, isn't it? I feel that after a couple of years, J & K issues might appear passe, as other states' issues would've 'improved.' Thanks to all the white diapers.
    The feeling of helplessness is like a kick in the gut.
    .-= Karthik´s last blog : ..All in a Day's Work =-.
  • Madhu, great post...what you said, wish our country people understood too...ek side pe telangana wants a separate state, ek side pe few Maharashtra parties want the non-maharashtrian to be out and what not..the biggest mistake was made at the time of creating state...they were created on the basis of the languages.. jab base hi weak hai, to aage kya hoga..wish we start thinking about country first and try and sort out issues relating to the nation rather than fighting with our own country people..
    .-= Neha´s last blog : ..All about Tea =-.
  • hi Madhu

    very much rational and valid points.

    1.The common call in all demands for a separate state is ”small is better”
    --> This point is not applicable to telangaana
    --> Out of the 28 states and 7 UTs currently in India , 70% are smaller than Telangana. Telangana’s population is nearly 4 crore. There are 25 states that are smaller than Telangana in population.
    --> Telangaana movement is not with the tag "small state , better governance"....but it is born out of the the exploitation and injustice, since 1956.
    -->The uniqueness about Andhra pradesh is that it was formed by the combination of two states (Hyderabad and Andhra). Andhra was formed in 1953. Hyderabad was an independent state from 1948 to 1956. AP was formed on the promises of 1956 Gentleman's agreement and certain safeguards/privileges for Telangaana .
    We are asking our existed state back.
    --> Not even single agreement/recommendations/tribunal judgements/court orders were never implemented since 1956

    2. But to expect better from Telangaana politicians than the rest of their Indian bretheren is stupidity.
    --> I totally agree with you.
    --> Separate state ensures us the default constitutional safeguards and rights to access our resources which have been denied since 50 years
    --> We have two choices.
    --> But to expect better from AP politicians than the rest of their Indian brethren is also stupidity as we have seen enough promises from centre and state govts since 50 years.

    please do read the wiki links if possible

    5. 610 GO
    6 1969 Jai Telangana Movement

    4. I am agreeing to your statement that Telangana will open the flood gates for small states . It is a happening.

    5. I would like to have your opinion on the point "If USA(30 crores) with uniform society can have 50 states, why cannot India have 50 states(100 crores) with diversified society"??

    6.Do you think Telengaana or Andhra or even Hyderabad will have the muscle it had in the centre pre-split ?
    --> I again agree with this point. As india is strong centre with weak federal structure , this point do holds weight-age.
    --> May be we need a constitutional amendment to clarify the criteria and definition of small state and big state as well as the maximum number of states in india? (like one state for 2 crore population?)

    7.“Politicians are like diapers, almost always full of crap ; if not, it is just a metter of time..“

  • Yes Madhu...we know the reality...No matter what happens, we know we are just going to be the same, helpless and lost.
    Smaller the place, better for governance? I don't think so...Better for the ruling government..How can the ruling Govt even agree to such a need, when this guy has not even won elections in those telangana states..ridiculous..

    God help us...
  • Hi Madhu
    Very well said, about 200-300 years back there were 550 provinces all over the country, the way the people are demanding the country to be split I think we will end up going back to 550 pieces.

    I saw the image, i think there is a small mistake in it.
    Under Karnataka there is a line "Kodagu is also called Madikeri"
    Madikeri is the district capital of Coorg or Kodagu, nobody calls Kodagu Madikeri, I know that coz I am from Bagamandala a small village in Coorg.
