Amateur Effort Or A Soulful Rendition ?

There are few in Bangalore who have not heard the soulful music of the run away Kannada hit Mungaaru Male.

The movie had a very average looking unknown boy next door Ganesh ring box-office success with more than able support of Mano Murthy’s music and Yograj Bhatt’s direction. This is one of the movies that started the up-trend in Sandalwood that had been reeling under duress for a few decades till 2005…

Here’s an amateur user trying his hand at a hindi rendition of the movie’s hit song “anisuthide yaako indu“. What do you think ? Amateur effort of a soulful rendition ?

Mungaaru Male

is a 2006 Kannada language movie directed by Yograj Bhat and produced by E Krishnappa. The film stars Ganesh, Pooja Gandhi, and Anant Nag in lead roles. The film was a success, exceeding expectations with box office earnings crossing Rs 75 Crores, 400 days after its release. The film is believed to have shaped and strengthened the careers of Ganesh, Yograj Bhat and Jayant Kaikini. The movie was the first in India for any language to be screened for continuously one year in a multiplex.

My vote : 7/10 for the effort, considering the soulful rendition and the beautiful lyrics — not much lost in translation !

  • @ Maya, I understand your point...he is a new comer...my point is not about the voice-over or the video or the presentation. his voice is nice; but i am talking about the lyrics...I wish he had tried something different from what is already there in the kannada version...again maybe I feel so as i am way too used to hindi songs...

  • @Karthik, That's what Gulmohat said as well :-) . I totally understand.

@Neha, Most commenters(me included) have heard the Kannada version and have a bias towards it ; cannot blame them, the song is very good (hero, not so much). So a fresh perspective like yours helps.

I agree the song could have been better but it is an amateur doing a voice-over on the original track..
  • Madhu, I guess I have not heard or never seen any kannada movie, I find the video very different...the tune is quite melodious, so the song could be much better...

ah, don't I sound like some music expert? I am not but :P

  • It kind of sounded odd to me. Maybe because I've heard the kannada version over a hundred times and got acclimatized to it. But still hindi lyrics seemed pale in comparison with Jayanth Kaykini's.
    Nice effort though.

  • @Avada, @Gulmohar,
    Totally agree...

@Madhu, wow ! You summed up this post so nicely. Agree.

    @Daisy,
This one is not a looker, hence my "..the movie had a very average looking unknown boy next door Ganesh ..". As far as heroes down south, not just in Kannada, they have been more guy next door than Bollywood.

Just looks per se you have Sudeep, Diganth, Dhyan ..
  • From the few exposures that I had with Kannada movies, the heroes didn't impress me much..:)

  • Hey that was a nice find.. I hadnt heard this hindi version.. this guy has a nice voice and maybe a struggling singer or something.. nice translation too :) liked it :) But it is not as good as the sonu version, ofcourse in kannada. I like the kannada lyrics a lot

Nice find Maya, I had not seen/heard this. My 2cents :

I would give 9/10 for the effort of this guy (assuming the singer came up with he lyrics as well). The end product in itself is very impressive. If I had not known the Kannada version I would have loved this..

Having said the above, a contrast that I would like to draw would be that the lyrics in the Hindi version is richer(richer is not essentially better). One of the reasons why the Kannada song caught up as much as it did (IMHO) is because of the very simplistic and every day talk nature of the lyrics in Kannada that was deemed fresh. This Hindi version has richer yet hackneyed lyrics(still great for an amateur). Another note is that the lyrics do not co-relate 1-1 with the Kannada lyrics...

I would give it a 7.5/10. I hope some music director finds this guy. He maybe a talent that needs nurturing..

This one has been around for a while I guess.
As much as I would like to hate it, it's not all that bad either.
I wish he had done a better job with the lyrics.
Maybe I love " haage summane" way to much to settle for anything else :-)
